The Meek Shall Inherit the World

While touring in Florida we decided to spend a few days at Jonathon Dickinson State Park near the town of Jupiter. The park is well kept, and is deep in natural wooded surroundings. We arrived mid afternoon in our 30’ motorhome and were informed that only a few of the sites in the park could accommodate our size, luckily they felt that there was a site available that we could fit into.

We were taken to the site, it was beautifully hidden among several tall pine trees and was isolated from neighboring sites by very thick patches of Cabbage Palms. We would be all alone right in the midst of a very busy park. The site was quite spacious once you were in and parked.

The problem was the entrance to the site was sort of a dog leg shape and it took some maneuvering for me to get backed into position. Thanks to our FRS (walkie-talkie) radios this maneuvering is made a whole lot easier. With these radios my wife can talk me in to position rather than me having to keep finding her in the rearview mirrors or her trying to shout directions from behind the motorhome.

We finally parked made our connections to power and water, lowered the awning into position, lit a fire in the fire pit, got out the cooler and the folding chairs. We sat and relaxed with a cool drink, cooked a little dinner then a long casual walk around the campgrounds until dark. Back at camp we listened to the sounds of the woods at night and watched the fire burn until only embers remained, life is sweat.

We awoke to the sounds and smell of the automatic coffeepot. My wife got out of bed and started breakfast while I made the bed. I heard my wife slap the counter top twice and just had to ask if she was making “slap jacks”. “No” she replied “just a couple of ants no big deal but I should put them in your breakfast mister smart guy”. Suddenly I heard my wife let out a scream. “Now what” I asked? “ANTS, ANTS, THE ANTS THEY ARE ON EVERYTHING” she yelled. The ants really were everywhere, on the counter tops, on the walls, on the floor; you name it they were there. My wife started killing the invaders while I went outside to see how they were getting in. Outside I found one of those beautiful palm fronds lying against the support arm of the awning, There were the meek little ants, on the move, like Sherman’s soldiers marching through Georgia. They had a trail, up the palm frond, down the support arm, and in the refrigerator vent to the biggest party they had ever been to.
