A Recient Trip To An RV Show

© Barry Houseknecht

Just returned from our first RV show in several years. It was in Dallas, Texas. There were a lot of RV's there and here are some of my observations:

1. Trailers and fifthwheels with only two slides are almost a thing of the past, seems that all of them had at least three slides if not four. You get more room in the RV but you loose carrying capacity.

2. Rear kitchens are gone. Of course that ain't all bad unless you want to replace your china every trip.

3. There seems to be a trend to have two doors in the rigs, it's handy but they take up space that may be used for other things.

4. We saw more reverse plans, that is with the living room up front and the bedroom in the rear. Just think how many times you will have to climb those three steps to watch TV. When they used the reversed plan there were no chairs in the living room just two couches

5. They are using smaller microwaves, when it is a microwave and when they use the convection ovens they use the full size units but then you don't get an oven.

6. Roof vents are seen less and they are replacing them with skylights.

7. There is a tendency to paint the higher end units a color other than white.

8. More air suspensions systems on the units.

9. Loads of toy carriers. This looks like where the new emphases are these days. There were even a few of these that were set up to provide the comforts and space for full timing with your motorcycles or four wheeler.

10. The new sixteen-inch tires are in. This makes the trailer higher, usually three steps rather than two, but these tires are much stronger than the ones they were using before thus you don't have to go to three axels as soon.

11. Some of the new floor plans put the bathroom sink and shower in the bedroom and not in a room by itself. Personally I didn't like that at all, but to each his own.

12. Plasma TV's have made their way into a lot of RV's there is a real weight savings but they still cost a buck or two. All in all we were not impressed enough to consider purchasing a new unit. I will say that the units we looked at were a good value for the dollar and if you are a first time buyer then there are some good trailers out there.
