Russian drama and literature are connected in a way that is unique. The common thread of writing by literary figures through the years has impacted society in unforgettable ways. Changing society takes time and must be conveyed to people so that it occurs, from novels to the theater this has been accomplished many times over. Russian society is becoming better because writers have written what they know to be true no matter what the cost turns out to be. Anton Chekhov said it well when he said, "A writer is not a confectioner, a cosmetic dealer, or an entertainer. He is a man who has signed a contract with his conscious and his sense of duty."
