Tolstoy's living conditions and status are shown throughout his works. The prominent backgrounds in his works are the green pastures and the dealings between the peasantry and nobility. In his writings he picked up where Turgenev left off and dealt with peasantry subjectively. The characters created in Tolstoy's works are very simple. The topics in his writings are the sane, the healthy, and the normal individual. Unlike Dostoyevsky who was humble, Tolstoy had no problem seeing himself as an authority figure. He was aware of his creativity and the genius he was. He was very bold in announcing to all his opinion on his writings. When Tolstoy wrote he could not control his ego from presenting itself in his characters and writings. Consequently his personality was presented in many portions of his works and was often autobiographical. Anna Karenina is a great example of how this occurred. Levin a character in the book very much parallels the life and personality of Tolstoy. From Levin's view on the city and love for the country to the way that his brother died, the parallels are numerous. Tolstoy regarded himself as a foremost prophet and teacher in his generation. Tolstoy in his later works had people became disciples. He is considered a great teacher and philosopher.
