Some of the shapes are astounding. I personally have several wonderfully shaped pieces. One is shaped as a large swan, another is in the shape of a chicken & one special piece is a replicated sturgeon. All are so individually unique & so beautiful to look upon that one really does forget that these pieces can be used for practical purposes. At the beginning of 20th century Khokhloma painting began to vanish as an industry. Shortly after the Russian Revolution it was revived in the Soviet . In the 1920's-30's the painters were united into what are termed, "artels." During the 1960's plants such as the Khokloma Painter and The Khokhloma Painting were founded have been the main centers of this type of craft art. Amazingly the most interesting feature of these beautiful pieces is that they are functional. I use mine a great deal. They are always the center of attention as well as the subject of conversation at all of our social functions. Sources: 1. Khokhloma: A History In Art 2. Eva Katkova 3.
