Elmer Update!


them again. And when I did, I was in for another surprise.

The flowers were blooming and the song birds singing when I met Samuel near the trail again. On this occasion Elmer was traveling in his summer version of the pack. There was no top on this one so Elmer calmly watched all the goings-on in the world as it passed him by while on his trail runs.

I talked with Samuel for a few minutes before he mentioned that Elmer had new responsibilities. "Oh, has he been visiting more people as a therapy cat?" I asked. "Oh no, that isn't it." Samuel replied with a broad grin. "Not that at all." I could tell he wanted me to ask, so I obliged. "So what is Elmer doing these days?" I was sure it was going to be an interesting story and I was not disappointed. " Well" Samuel began, "Elmer has gotten himself in the kitten rescue business. In fact, he adopted a little tyke." Samuel smiled broadly and added, "Elmer found a little grey striped kitten and he made sure I knew about it too. He marched the kitten right up into the house one day. It was a skinny little thing and I felt sorry for it, so I decided that since Elmer had brought the kitten home, I'd better take it in. Maybe because I had found Elmer as a kitten, he understood what the kitten was going through. That little kitten followed Elmer everywhere. To the food bowl, to the cat litter and so forth. If Elmer took a nap, then the kitten took a nap too, right next to him. Elmer washed the little kitten and showed him what was what in the world. Why, if I didn't know better, I'd have to say it was Elmers kitten. But of course it can't be. Elmers been fixed ya know." Satisfied that he had cleared up any doubt I may have had regarding who the kittens father was, Samuel continued.

"Elmer showed the kitten where the best sun bathing spot was and he'd call the kitten, then he'd spend a long time making sure the kitten was clear as a whistle. He'd wash him all over and
