And Then It's Over!

by Bob Blickenderfer.

It ended so suddenly. For over a year I thought about the marathon I was going to attempt to run. Then for 6 hard months I trained for it. The day arrived and I accomplished my goal. The feeling at the finish line was unbelievable and something I know I'll never experience again.

The sense of accomplishment, the pride, the runners high! Unbelievable. And then it was over.

The next day it was back to work as usual, except for the fact I could hardly walk. Congratulations from my co-workers and then back to work. It's like the marathon was something in the distant past.

Tuesday, 2 days later, I headed to the park and walked 1 1/2 miles. Running was impossible because my toe nails were totally black and loose. So far, 3 have fallen off and 2 more are ready to. Couldn't put pressure on them. I walked, though, because exercise of some sort helps the pain go away faster.

Friday I ran 3 miles without too much discomfort. Then Sunday I ran 8 miles. That was when a noticeable after effect concerning training took place. It took everything I could muster to get through the run. Not sure why, as I will still be running in 5K and 10K races throughout the year, but I felt like I could go home at any time and not worry about it.

The next Sunday, I did just that. Forgot to take an Advil (I need to take 2 before every training run) and the nagging pains and the lack of desire took its toll. I ran 4 miles and headed home. The push I felt during the marathon training was gone.

The following Sunday, Walt, my training partner for the marathon and I went out for our every 3 weeks long run. We decided to keep it up, as we are running a half marathon in October. Again, the fact we are no longer training for a marathon seems to have taken away the push. We both were flabbergasted at about the 6 mile mark at the fact that we were getting tired and the legs were feeling sore. Our question to each other was "How did we ever manage to run a marathon?"
