I have been getting quite a few email regarding the safety of a high protein
diet for runners that wish to lose weight. And what is ketosis all about. After
some research I found an interesting article that explains this. Another
editor at Suite 101 has a great deal of information about low carb diets.
Allow me to mention that high protein diets are NOT lacking in carbs.
The carbs are merely in the appropriate ratio to protein.
One theme in many email to me seemed to be that most of the concern dealt with issues such as; " is if one is eating a high amount of protein, won't that lead to Ketosis; an unhealthy state?" Below is one medical opinion to this. I am not a doctor; nor have I had any medical training. Nor should anyone believe that I am qualified to give any advice with regards to health issues. I am however, a runner, and have personally used the low carb (remember - this is NOT a no - carb diet) approach to losing weight at times. I have also used this to control an imbalance in blood sugar levels. I am including this information here as one runner to another - as one consumer to another. Before I go on, I'd like to address another issue. If you have never had a blood insulin problem, as I have, or if you have never had a weight issue - then just skip this article. And congratulations. You have not had to deal with many of the health concerns that some of us do. To answer another question I got this week; yes, of course I still eat almost all foods - I just try to include some protein with each meal. A few of you have asked how my running is going . Well - it isn't. At this moment I am doing rehab on my knee again. Once I reached 8 mile runs the knee became unstable and hurt enough that I knew I was going to be having an issue. So it is back to rehab and hopefully walking mixed with running in the near future. Still - in October of last year my husband went through surgery and had a large malignant melanoma removed. Until we got the results back to see if it had spread, we had no way of knowing if his life would be measured in
