Young Runner; Part 2

This true story is continued from last week.

I leaned forward, anxious to find out what happened and asked, "What was their reaction?" "Well," he laughed, "they were sort of amazed at all the facts I had, and after they consulted, they agreed to look into it and try it my way." He added "They said they would continue monitoring me as time went by and see how I did.

"You know my dad died when I was little and I'm an only child. So I know my mom was really worried. I'm all the family she has. She prayed a lot for me ya know. And I think it musta helped." He finished the last of the hot chocolate and ate the rest of the donut.

"Prayer always helps," I agreed. "Anyway," he continued, "I did all the treatments, a lot of them and finally, I only had to go once a month. They told me I couldn't run- that I'd be too weak. But I decided I was going to run this race no matter what!"

Benny's face was beaming with pride as he added, "I had my last checkup this Thursday and there's no sign of the cancer! I knew I'd beat it! And I knew I'd finish this race today! As far as I'm concerned, this will be my slowest race of the year. Cuz I'm gonna run faster and faster now. At every race I run. By next year I'll be as fast as I was before." Confidence lit up his face.

I said enthusiastically. "Benny. I believe you will too!" "Some of my friends know all about this stuff. But they treat me the same as ever. Which is what I insisted on!" He grinned.

I said, "That's good." I could see he was feeling much better. "My mom wanted to be here this morning, but she has a bad case of the flu and is stuck in bed. I told her I'd make some soup for her when I got home. It'll be nice to do something for her for a change," he said. "She's been really great."

"Hey Benny," some boys were yelling to him, "you need to come on over here for the photos!" A photographer was preparing to snap a few photos of the track team and Benny was an important part of it.

Benny got up slowly then said, "It's been nice talking to you and thanks for the encouragement at the end of the race."
