What have you learned about yourself lately? What insight has running given you?

Running has given a lot to me and taught me a lot about myself. I learned plenty about determination and the true nature of my character. Frankly, I like what I see. Of course, ultimately, running is not just about running. It is about so much more. There are those of us who use running as a method to explore our character, test our nature and the parameters of our life, as we challenge ourselves to go on when we want to quit, and go faster when we want to stop. That does build character. For myself, running is an intricate part of what defines me as a person. What I have learned will be with me all my life.

I have learned how to exert my considerable will over obstacles and roadblocks in my life and to win against formidable odds. I have tested my belief system about my limitations and in doing so, I have learned a great deal about human nature. My own and others. In part, I can thank running for that. I have also learned that running can hold amazing surprises, just as life does. There is great satisfaction in giving your all, trying your best and succeeding by your own standard. If failure happens to be part of an experience, no matter, as long as the effort was genuine.

Through running, I learned that by taking that next step when I longed to quit was to experience success. I do not run for the person next to me, nor for the timer at the end of the race or even for my loved ones. No, I run for myself, I run to embrace life. I run with a grateful heart because for now, for this moment, I can run. It is a delight and privilege. But make no mistake; it is not always easy. However, in my opinion, easy does not build character, challenge does. I am very much aware of the effort it takes for some people to run. Their iron will and courage has humbled me and continues to inspire me!
