Happy New Year to everyone! I hope you are looking forward to another year of running. I know I certainly am. Due to the amount of e-mail I have received from readers asking for a question and answer section, as well as a comment area, I have decided to add an area I will call "Dear Editor." This will cover the e-mail I have received and have not had the opportunity to respond to individually, or it may include a comment or question that has been sent to me that I feel may be of interest to you. Even though there is a discussion area at the end of each article, most of you seem to prefer to contact me directly by sending an e-mail and talk about an event in your life, a viewpoint about your running or racing, or a question you have. As it is my desire to accommodate you, the reader, I will indeed be happy to add the new "Dear Editor" area at the end of each article starting with this one. I hope you will be pleased with it and hope that it will make the Running area at Suite 101 even more enjoyable for everyone. Also new for 1998 will be an addition each week to the list of "links." Check out this week's new addition which is a forum. I think you'll enjoy it. Don't forget to check the list each week as I update it. Enjoy! As you know from my posting for the month of December, I had surgery. The reason was due to three herniated discs in my back. Not a fun time for me, but I was very careful and chose a gifted neurosurgeon to do the surgery. The outcome looks very promising indeed, but I must admit, I still have a long way to go before I can run again. I hope to be competing again in the late spring, but for the immediate future I am focusing on just being able to run again. As a runner I have had injuries over the years, but none have presented me with the challenge that this has. I feel that I should also mention that running in no way caused this condition! I plan on covering what happened and why and what treatments are available for the runner who does not want to give up and give in to the idea that they may never run again.
