RUNNERS! Pacemaker May Be A Mistake! Barry was a runner for many years and by the time he reached 43 years old often won in his age group. He watched what he ate, exercised regularly by running or biking and was by all accounts healthy. Heart disease ran in his family so when he moved to a new city, he decided to do the responsible thing and find a new doctor. A co-worker recommended a doctor and Barry soon found himself sitting in the doctor's office waiting to be seen. He wasn't worried as he watched his cholesterol and other important health factors. He didn't have high blood pressure, had never smoked and figured he'd be in and out of the office very quickly. Barry had a lot going for him, but one thing he did not have going for him was knowledge of heart rates a runner may have or heart rate training. The doctor saw him in his office and took a long time talking to him, getting his family history before he examined him. Finally, he told his nurse to show Barry to the examination room where the doctor would conduct a physical. A few minutes later Barry's blood pressure was taken by the nurse. She appeared nervous and after checking it twice, left the room in a hurry.. Moments later the doctor appeared and immediately asked him how he felt as he listen intently to his heart. Barry felt fine and said so. The doctor then declared it was a good thing Barry had come to see him! He wasn't sure, but he was almost certain that Barry needed a pacemaker. "Did you know your heart rate is only 38 beats per minute?" No, Barry did not know that. "Did you know that it should be around 70 beats per minute?" "No," Barry answered, alarmed at this bit of information.
