How to run a marathon?

I received a great deal of e-mail this past week asking about how does a person run a marathon? The majority of the questions really didn't have to do with the nuts & bolts of training. Rather, the overall concern seemed to be in the area of how does one start to accomplish such a seemingly daunting task?

Well, I do have a solution. Now do keep in mind that it is MY solution. There are other ideas that may work as well or better. As I have only completed one marathon, perhaps I am not the one to give advice. But on the other hand, as one who previously thought a marathon was beyond me, maybe I am just the person to point you in the right direction. After all, I just completed my first marathon recently and intend to do more.

Here is the first clue. I always thought a marathon was beyond me. And so it was. That is, as long as I believed that and listened to all my doubts; some well founded and others not.

As I ponder what changed and how I had finally accomplished running in, and completing my first marathon a few things came to mind. Let's face it, I was not in the best running shape of my life. Nor was the timing really convenient for me to finally train for and run my first marathon.

So what was my secret? How did I do it?

( I bet those of you that are well seasoned veterans of marathons will in some way recognize the steps listed.)

"HOW TO RUN ANY MARATHON"

First the dream.

Then the decision.

Then the plan.

Then the work.

Then the reward.

Seem simple enough? It is. But I believe you need each component of that list.

To break it down a bit; first you must have the dream in your mind or heart. Then the next step is to make the decision to DO it. You do not need any answers of HOW to do it at this point.

Once you have made the decision to do the thon, you will need to plan for it. You need to do research and set up a training schedule, focus on what type of training routine and what time to do it. In other words, all the training should be well thought out and planned out. Become well informed, ask

I am very interested in running a marathon, but have yet to train. i would like to know if 10 months is a reasonable amount of time for a beginner runner. am i setting myself up for failure? also, ...
