Runner Has Colon Caner.I believe we all need to be reminded about priorities once in a while. I was reminded this week, that none of us should take our health for granted. Nor should we assume that because we are runners that we do not have to worry about such things as colon cancer. I heard from Dan, a runner friend of mine this week. The news was not good. Although this runner is only 45, has never smoked, has watched his red meat consumption for years, exercises five days a week (running) and does not eat a high fat diet, he found out he has colon cancer. That is the bad news. The good news is that is was still contained in the colon and the prognosis is hopeful. But he told me that it was only because his wife "hounded him for weeks to get tested" (his words, not mine) that he followed up and had a colon screening this month. Had she not "hounded him" he was told he would have been dead in the not-too-distant future. The thing that frightened him the most, he said, was the cancerous tumor was almost at the point of migrating. And had he gone for a screening six months later than he did, it would have been too late for him. His family had no history of colon cancer. His wife's family did, but she got a clean bill of health after her screening. So, I said all that to remind you, as I was reminded, that we should use the diagnostic tools available to us, before it is too late. It is up to you to decide what your priorities are in life. And, well, as long as you are alive, then you have choices to make and priorities to set. I wish Dan the best of luck as he contines on the road to a full recovery. Hope to find out he is back out on the roads again, doing what he loves to do. Running. For those of you that missed it, you may find this interesting! Take a look at my newly published book! Here is the link to a great running book. Thanks!
