Harry.Not Your Typical Runner!

© Lynn Seely

Shari Philmeck is a runner, marathoner and writer, among other things. She writes a weekly running column called "Just Running Around" for a newspaper located in northeast Pennsylvania. She had some pretty good tips this week, as usual, and I have included a couple here for you to enjoy before I go on to my article. Enjoy!

Have the icy roads and cold temperatures kept you indoors and less active than you are accustomed to? Is your body moving into the hibernation mode? You know, craving and succumbing to carbs, only to progress on to a sluggish, "marshmallow on the couch" comatose condition. Is your middle beginning to resemble the consistency of a marshmallow? Have no fear. Help is on the way.

Here's the formula to determine the appropriate calorie requirement based on your weight and activity level: To calculate calories for weight maintenance, multiply your current weight by 10. Divide your weight in half and add that to your answer from the first step. Add 100 calories for each mile you run that day. (Remember, that's a big fat zero if you stayed on the couch and watched the snow fall!) Now to lose weight, subtract 20% from the total calorie figure. This information comes from nutritionist Nancy Clark.

Here's some good advice from RUNNER'S WORLD Deputy Editor Bob Wischnia: "Rather than wearing the same shoes everyday, alternate between two different models. You'll respond slightly differently to each one, which will ease the stress on your feet and body."

Thanks Shari!

He knows about heart monitor training and how important fluid intake is. He understands and puts into practice how important consistent training is if you want to be at your best.

And Harry is at his best. If you were to meet him you would first see a broad smile that lights up the room. He'd probably have some humorous joke to tell within the first few minutes you met him. But if you extended your hand in a greeting, you'd get no handshake. Not because he is unfriendly. And I know what you are thinking; no, not because he has anything wrong with his arms or hands. No, they are just fine.

In fact Harry is just fine in my book. All the way around. But there is something
