Oh My, Is It Over Soon?Well folks, I am still struggling with this case of flu. One would expect a runner would be able to just toss this annoying detour of illness off easily. In fact, I mistakenly thought I would not even catch the flu. After all, I have been doing all the right things this winter. However, as I am reminded every so often, we can not control all the events in our lives as much as we like to think. At least I can't. So here I sit, hunched over this computer, coughing my head off and longing for the day I can slip on my running shoes and run again. Alas, I do not think it will happen very soon. By all accounts this has been a very difficult winter for a lot of people. Runners and non runners alike. The flu has hit us in record numbers this year. The hospitals have been overwhelmed at times all across the USA. For weeks as I watched the news I felt sorry for those that were less fortunate and had succumbed to this years flu bug. I thought I would not get the flu this year. I was drinking the right amounts of fluids, getting enough rest and of course exercising regularly. Even when my husband came down with the flu after he returned from a business trip, I was certain I would escape its clutches. Well, I was wrong. Eight days later it is beginning to lose its grip over me. But as I sit here I find my mind goes back to the beautiful warm days of summer and the glorious training in preparation for the October marathon I completed. My soul longs for that weather and those long training runs. My body? Well, it just hasn't gotten the message yet, but it will. Right now it just longs for the aches and pains to be gone. To those of you that have just gotten over the flu or some other bug, hurray for you. Now you can begin to regain some of the lost joy from those days that you were not able to run and rebuild your health. But take it slow! Don't expect to be back at the level of health your were at prior to being ill. To those who escaped the dreaded winter flu this year, congratulations! I hope to be among your group next year!
