Rita: First Marathon.

Rita Skechus is a lot of things to a lot of people. To name only a few -- she is a mother, a teacher and a runner. In her capacity as a runner she exhibits the enthusiasm that demonstrates she runs for the pure joy of it. You can count on her to brighten any race she attends with animated conversation and a wonderfully encouraging attitude that includes everybody around her. And last, but not least, Rita is fast. She frequently wins in her age group.

Rita and I were sitting at a small table in a tiny coffee shop. As we sipped our cappuccino the conversation was all about the Steamtown marathon scheduled a few days from then.

We were both happily anticipating the event . Rita mentioned, "You know, that was the first marathon I ever ran! The Steamtown marathon!"

Steamtown is located in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The race is held every year in October. This year, 1999, would be the fourth marathon.

Runners never forget their first marathon. In some mysterious way it tends to define their running. Good experience or not, runners learns a great deal about themselves just by attempting to run a marathon. As it turns out, Rita's first marathon was also Steamtown's first annual marathon. It was a good experience for her.

When I asked her which had been her most memorable race, Rita said, "There are a few. One is the race at Harvey's Lake. Then there is the local Race For The Cure. That is for such a good cause." Rita found out like a lot of runners do that she is often moved to tears when she is at that race.
