Today I wanted to talk about commercials.
Huh? I thought this was a running column? Well, perhaps it is and to reveal how important running has become to our society over the last decade I thought about all the commercials that have been airing on television lately. My very favorite is the new German Silva commercial that has a snappy beat. Granted, it took about three sessions of concentrating intensely before I understood the entire thing, but it was worth it. In fact, I'm almost ready to rush out and buy a pair because the ad has such a snappy way of conveying some very interesting information about a shoe. The other factor that kept me interested in the ad was that Silva does what he does best. He runs! If you haven't seen the commercial yet, you've missed a great ad. You'll know it when you see it. You may have noticed lately that fitness and running have hit an all time high on the commercial aspect of television. It is a big business. For once, the issue that is big money and hence big profit, is also good for us! True, it isn't a car that will make you "famous", "fly away", "thirty stories above the world", "intelligent", "rich" and blah blah blah. Car commercials really insult your intelligence. I mean REALLY! How about the ad that has a man driving a car as he proclaims, " I don't buy a car to get me from place to place..." Oh sure buddy, me neither! Duh, I want it to be a fashion statement... Another example; on this ad they show the car floating down the street, which is now a canal, and I'm suppose to rush out and buy that car! Pleeeeeze! Why people are paid to write commercials like that is beyond me! They irritate me and I mute them as soon as they come on. (Oh, thank goodness for the mute button!) But the shoe commercials are not too bad. At least , so far, they seem to focus on the shoe and how it affects the runner. They tend to get our attention and then do their promotion. Ok, I can live with that. So far so good. Basketball stars have their own way of promoting their shoes and even their methods are interesting, not insulting to our intelligence. Of course some food commercials are still the most prevalent on the television. I happen to like pizza, and although I can not get a Little Caesars Pizza in my hometown, I do laugh at their commercials. The people who write their ads do a good job. Go To Page: 1 2
