IN A BAD MOOD? GO RUN!: Want To Run But Can't? Watch That Mood

© Lynn Seely

I have suspected it for a while. I have read studies done on this very subject. Mood and exercise, specifically running. Can running help your mood?

Well, I, for one, can verify. Verify what, you ask?

Verify that if I'm not in a good mood, a run will almost certainly fix me up. However, if I miss a run that I've looked forward to, it does not help my mood.

Not a glass of wine, a magic pill, or getting the taxes done on time, (although knowing my taxes are FINALLY behind me doesn't hurt my mood), will enhance your mood like running will.

However, if I miss a regular run outside because of elements beyond my control, I do get out of sorts.

A mere two weeks ago I was enjoying a lovely Easter Sunday. My husband took me out to lunch after church . The sky was blue, the weather comfortable. Ah, I sighed contentedly, winter was FINALLY over I thought. I noticed flowers beginning to peek up through the ground and heard birds happily chirping. It was a nice day. I didn't run because, gosh, spring was truly here and I could run outside tomorrow.

The next day was Monday morning and the alarm rang as usual before the sun was up.This morning, like every morning, I got up early with my husband at 5:30 am. That way I can spend a little time with him before our busy day starts. We usually enjoy a hot cup of coffee or tea together and chat, then I'll make his lunch while he does his training run on our treadmill. It's dark outside this early in the morning so he'll train on the treadmill except for weekends or the rare day he gets home early enough to run outside.

On this Monday morning, the day after Easter, I thought it seemed unusually cold. I shuffled into the kitchen where hubby had already started the coffee pot and peered outside. AAARRRRKKK!!!! It was snowing! HARD! The winds were gusting up to sixty miles an hour and the temperature read an unbelievable 10 degrees.

This can't be! What about March coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb? This was some lamb! On this last day of March, the weather was setting a lot of new records in this area of the country. A freak winter snow storm had slammed into Pennsylvania. My mood was NOT very happy, and there wasn't much chance, I thought, of it getting better as the day wore on.

Good job Lynn! I ran outside that day in NE PA -- It did me in for the day, I spent the rest of the day on the couch! But at least I got the run in and that helped my mood for the rest of the day. ...
