Well folks; it finally happened! I turned fifty today! The BIG FIVE OH!

You youngsters of 35 or less may not understand my attitude. (Unless you are runners.)

But wait; what is my attitude? What do I think about this, uh, half-century mark?

What about this "aging" issue?

Well, it's all a matter of perspective.

I must say that it means one thing to me - a new age group!

Actually, runners of any age will grin right along with me and understand why the prospect of being in a "new age group" makes me smile. Non-runners will shake their head slowly from side to side, their faces reflecting great puzzelment as they try to understand what in the world I am talking about.

I am talking about beginnings. It is now a new time and place for me at this juncture in my life. It is a time to reflect upon the past and also happily evaluate what the future may hold. Above all, it is a time to be positive, and I am. Maybe this is especially true due to the fact I am looking at it from a runners viewpoint. As a fifty year old, I am now in a brand new age group. That means if I run in a race I will be competing mainly against those runners who are 50 or over. Guess what else? I will be the youngest runner in that group! (I mean, at 49 years old I was in the top end of my age group, one of the oldest and running against those young, very young, forty year olds.)

Perhaps had I never become a runner, I would see turning fifty as becoming old. But I don't. I see it as a great advantage. I will be on the young side of the runners age group. That hasn't happened for a lot of years!

I have a lot to look forward to. A lot to do. A lot to be thankful for.

So, is my life perfect at age fifty? Well, no. But it's pretty close! Hey, remember, I'm in a new age group now!

See you at the starting line someday...I'll be the one with the great big grin.
