The first twenty years of my life, I was healthy. The sports I enjoyed included running, judo and wrestling. However, when I was twenty-one, my life would be changed dramatically.

I was on my motorcycle when a car failed to stop at an intersection. I slammed into the drivers door at 30 miles per hour and was thrown over the top of the car . I landed on the ground in an awkward sitting position with one leg straight out and the other bent at the knee.

I was up and walking within ten minutes of the accident. Although I was shaken up, I thought I was unhurt. I was not aware that a bone in the base of my spine had been turned sideways.

The 1970s and most of the 1980s were a blur of back muscle pain, drugs and sleep problems. I saw every conceivable type of doctor and health practitioner I could find, from chiropractors, massage therapists, physiotherapists, GP's and back surgeons. I took a variety of drugs over time in an effort to deal with the pain and to sleep. Needless to say , I was no longer exercising.

In 1986 I had the good fortune to see a physiotherapist who identified the bone problem and adjusted it back into place. This physiotherapist is one of several heroes I have. His name is Howard Jones of Richmond, BC, Canada.
