Anne Tyler said, "I write because I want more than one life, I want a wider selection. It's greed, plain and simple. When my characters join the circus, I'm joining the circus." To me, this is the reason why so many people roleplay. The chance to explore another life for a few hours... but sometimes it's hard to decide who to be. With that, here are a few ideas when you simply can't think of a new type of character to create:
1. Mix and match personality traits of people you know 2. Describe the author of a wild piece of graffiti 3. Interview a character. Ask the difficult questions and insist on candid answers. 4. Think about a secret you hide, about yourself, and give it to a character totally unlike yourself. 5. Go to a thrift shop. Look at the vintage lace, touch the dusty lamps and antique jewel boxes. Who owned them? Who sold them? 6. What was Mother Theresa like as a child? Machiavelli? Santa Claus? What was your character like? Hopefully this will spark someone's imagination and lead them into new realms of roleplay. Have you got any favorite starting points for character creation? Post them here. RP on! Go To Page: 1
