On the Horizon

First off, my apologies for not having an article posted since the end of January. Having moved out to a beach town during the off-season, we had a hard time having phone cables installed. Three weeks without 'Net access was far too long. But the weekly RP column is b-aaa-acckkk, with a look at e-zines devoted to our hobby.

The brand spanking newest one is the MUDZINE. Steve Sicherman is working hard to make an entertaining site with everything from MU* reviews to gaming logs. Got an itch to write about MU*ing? Contact him at ssicherman@shaw.wave.ca to volunteer.

For that matter, one of the oldest RP 'zines, The RPG Times, needs writers too. Home of MaBarry's Amusings and Shocalogical Observations, two of the funniest columns about roleplaying around, it's the official e-zine of the Internet Role Playing Society.

Dimensions is an offbeat potpourri of gaming info. With an interactive novel and chat program, it's one of the liveliest sites. Look here for game reviews, related book and movie news and links to commercial and free MU*es. Drop by to share gaming stories at Bar Tales or ask a question at the Gamer's Forum. Need an NPC to round out that campaign? Pick one up at The Waterhole.

In the GURPS arena, there's The Pyramid, devoted to Steve Jackson games. This one is worth a look even if you don't play GURPS for its link to Murphy's Laws, a collection of nonsensical game rules found in systems like AD&D and Ars Magica.

Onto other topics. New MU*s are always popping up, even as old favorites collapse. So there's no end to places crying out for staff help. If you want to show off your building or coding skills, or find a new venue for your adminning know-how, stop by the new Mud Staff Resource Page. As part of the MU* Ring, it's one of the most detailed and visible sites for games to advertise staff openings.

If you'd rather browse the newsgroups, try rec.games.mud.announce. The strictly psychocoders might like alt.mud.programming. And for the rest of us, rec.games.mud.misc and rec.games.mud.admin sometimes carry on intriguing discussions. Be forewarned, though, that these groups unfortunately attract megaloads of spam.

That wraps up this week's RP ramblings. Upcoming columns are going to take a look at net events and chat programs for gamers, as soon as I figure out how to participate. Hopefully my struggles to chat will help you avoid the same snarls. Until next week, have fun storming the castle. : )
