Curse of the Black Dog ... Rottweiler Style

For centuries, legends of spectral, Black Dogs have been found throughout Europe. Large and with glowing red eyes, these evil creatures have permeated the folklore from Ireland to even Germany. Depending on the legend or location, seeing a Black Dog can be can be anything from a prediction of misfortune to a death omen.

And as Europeans colonized the new world, it seems that the Black Dogs followed with them. Black Dog from the new world can be quite varied. Sometimes their behavior and appearance matches that of their European ancestors. Other times they can be quite different.

I should know. One commonly appears at my house. It appears to be a female. And while it is large and black, its eyes only glow red in certain lighting. Likewise, while its appearance does often predict an unpleasant event, thank goodness it is not as severe as those in Europe.

So for this Halloween, I thought I would share with you some of the curses that the appearance of the Black Dog signifies at this house.

Curse of the Mouse Hand Slime

One of the most common places for the Black Dog to appear is when I am sitting at my desktop, surfing the net. She seems appear out of nowhere by my side (although there is often a strange click-click-click sound just before she appears). When the Black Dog appears next to my computer, this is an omen predicting a very disgusting event. When she appears in this location, I know that within seconds my mouse hand will be shoved away by an unseen force and coated with a foul, clear slime. The slime seems to come from a long, pink entity that resembles a tongue.

What this strange, sticky substance is, I have no idea. But I often find my hand so saturated in sticky goo that I have to abandon my computer and head for the bathroom sink.

Curse of the Body Slam

Often, the appearance of the Black Dog is a prediction of a painful attack. I will be lying in bed when I feel something nudge against the mattress. I look over and see the ghostly beast staring back at me. I know the attack is imminent, so I quickly cover my head and protect whatever vital organs I can. Then from out of nowhere, an 80 lb force lands on me. I don't know what is behind this painful body slam. After all, my head is covered. Remember?
