SerendipityCusack has always been the everyday hero. The guy next door we wouldn’t want to date, but would definitely marry once we smartened up. As Jonathan Trager he holds the same appeal and more. This is a guy who will go to great lengths to find his destiny. He’ll gladly play the fool--or the jackass as Dean would say--for love. What woman could resist a guy who would go to such extraordinary lengths? What woman could resist John Cusack with his crooked smile, soulful eyes and somewhat clumsy charisma? Beckinsale moves with ease from smitten and superstitious to defeated and determined. Pretty and pert, she makes a good match for Cusack. The only person better suited to him is Jeremy Piven, as NY Times obit writer and best friend, Dean Kansky. Piven is Cusack’s best friend in life and his perfect comedic complement. Speaking of comedy, Eugene Levy turns in a spotlight-stealing performance as a bent, blackmailing salesman with boundary issues. Serendipity left me smiling long after I got home. The script, the cast, even the romance and ambiance of New York at Christmas time (as it once was and will hopefully be again), made this a favorite of mine. This movie is humor and heart with a heavenly twist. I give it five hearts and feel very fortunate to have found it...must be serendipity. CAST Best lines: “If anyone would be qualified to know he’s found his soul mate it would be me, his first wife.” Jonathan’s best friend, Dean making a toast. “Would $20 help?” “Chase me!” Bloomingdale’s salesman to Jonathan. “Let’s just pray he’s a bald fascist who picks his nose and wipes it under the car seat.” Eve to Sara. “You know who plays golf? Guys who are too fat to play tennis.” Eve to Sara. “Maybe the absence of a sign is a sign.” Jonathan refuting Dean’s argument that he shouldn’t stop searching for Sara. “I want to be a jackass!” Dean worshipping Jonathan and his fool for love ways.
