Someone Like You
Fox Pictures 2001 Rated: PG-13 Now in theaters "The story about the one that got away and the one she never saw coming." Jane Goodale (Ashley Judd) books talent for the Diane Roberts Live talk show. When she's introduced to her new co-worker, Ray Brown (Greg Kinnear) she's instantly smitten. Within six weeks they're blissfully in love and moving in together. Then Ray does the unthinkable... he breaks up with her. Heartbroken and homeless, Jane decides to room with the show's producer, Eddie Alden (Hugh Jackman). She also seeks answers to why men are unable to commit. Her bovine theory is born when she discovers a bull will never mate with the same cow twice. Her hypothesis seems further supported by the antics of her womanizing roomate. When Jane's best friend, Liz (Maria Tomei), asks her to write a magazine column about her theory she agrees. Writing under the name Dr. Marie Charles, she becomes an overnight sensation only to get caught in her own web of lies when her boss, Diane (Ellen Barkin), insists they book Dr. Charles for the talk show. Adding to the debacle is the realization-- thanks to Eddie and her brother-in-law--that her theory might actually be nothing but a bunch of bull. Someone Like You has an exemplary cast. Ashley Judd is effervescent and funny. A shining delight! Hugh Jackman is pure, rugged rapture. An irresistible bad boy with a vulnerable heart. Women will easily identify with Judd's character at the same time they'll get heated over Hugh. Greg Kinnear once again plays the loveable louse with great charm and charisma. Ellen Barkin is in her element as the dynamic and sexy Diane and Marisa Tomei sparkles in only the way she can as the outspoken, exhuberant Liz. (I'm glad she's back!) This movie is humorous from the get go with it's voiceover intro to the cow theory and offbeat subtitles like: The Vocalization of Emotions, Death Of A New Cow and Current Cow Sob Story. Add witty dialogue and preposterous situations (like when Jane wants to short circuit her nasal memories) and you have a laugh-out-loud, feel good movie peppered with poignancy. As its tagline suggests though, the majority of the romance actually takes place between Jane and Ray. Judd and Kinnear are cute together, but it's the chemistry between Judd and Hughman that sizzles. Unfortunately, this is one story when the real romance begins when the credits roll. That aside, Someone Like You is engaging and endearing. I give it four hearts for being packed with laughs, but saving the best romance for last. CAST
