Richard Gere, Helen Hunt
Artisan Entertainment 2000 Rated: R Now on video and DVD A gorgeous gynecologist is overwhelmed by the demanding women in his life. Then he meets a beautiful golf pro who doesn't need him for anything and he loses his heart to her. Dr. Sullivan "Sully" Travis is a successful, gorgeous gynecologist. His Dallas, Texas office is packed with women, old and young, anxious to visit him. Never have I seen ladies so willing to put their feet in stirrups, even if they are fur lined. Heck, one woman is even what you'd call a regular. Joanna (Janine Turner) repeatedly sashays into the office with pouty, ruby red lips and "take me now" outfits insisting that something is wrong. When the doctor informs her she's fine and can go home the wealthy matron--and wife of one of Dr. T's hunting buddies-- acts disheartened and unsatisfied. (Ewww!) From staff to patients, Dr. T's office is a cacophony of frazzled and frenetic females. His personal life is no less demanding and estrogen-filled. His beautiful wife, Kate (Farrah Fawcett) has to be institutionalized because she's suffering from a rare disorder that causes her to revert back to a childlike state. (It also causes her to strip and dance naked in a water fountain outside of a Godiva store.) Research suggests the "Hestia Complex" is caused by someone being loved too much. (Lord, please let Richard Gere love ME too much. I'm certain I could handle it!) Adding to the histrionics of his life are, Peggy (Laura Dern), his sweet, but perpetually sloshed sister-in-law who has moved in with her three young girls, Dee Dee (Kate Hudson), his eldest daughter who is planning her upcoming wedding and Connie (Tara Reid), his youngest daughter, who besides having an unnatural interest in the JFK conspiracy theory insists Dee Dee can't get married because her heart really belongs to the maid-of-honor (Liv Tyler). When Sully meets golf pro, Bree Davis he discovers a woman unlike any he knows. A woman who doesn't want, expect or need anything from him. Not surprisingly, he falls in love with her. Surprisingly, (MAJOR SPOILER) she does not fall for him. Yep, you read that right. I won't tell you the specifics of what happens to their relationship and I certainly won't tell you about the ludicrous, farfetched ending, but I will say these two do not ride off into the sunset together. And so begins my diatribe. 'Dr T and the Women' is an unbearable movie with an extraordinary cast and as my husband says, "You can have the best cast in the world, but if the story sucks, it's still going to suck." This
