Bet you think I've lost my mind. You come to the Romantic Comedy Corner and what do you find? A review of the movie that had Tyra Banks dancing on a bartop with a wet t-shirt. Surely, Terri must mean another Coyote Ugly.... Nope, believe it or not that's the one I'm talking about. When Amy Sandrin recommended I review this film I was skeptical and while it's not what you'd traditionally call a romantic comedy it is romantic and it does have humor in it, as well as drama. Still wary? Well, trailers have often deceived us. Anyone remember Thelma and Louise? The previews led me to believe it was a comedy. That's why I went and saw it and why I still regret it. Coyote Ugly was marketed as a beer, babes, and breasts, bar movie. I expected the story to revolve around all five Coyotes and their barroom escapades. Boy was I wrong. And happily so! The story is actually about Violet Sanford an aspiring songwriter from Jersey who decides her dreams won't come true if she doesn't go after them. That said, she leaves her dad (John Goodman) and heads to NYC on her own. She moves into a dive and pounds the pavement, peddling her demo tape. She's painfully unsuccessful and disheartened when she enters a club. She's told the gorgeous guy who caught her eye is Mr. O'Donnell, the owner. Taking a risk, she pitches her music and hands him her tape only to find out she's been tricked. Mr. Kevin O'Donnell is actually a cook. Burned, she goes home. Violet then comes to a horrible realization. In order to get her music heard she'll have to go to an open mic night. There's just one problem. She's a songwriter, not a singer. She suffers from paralyzing stage fright and there's no way she can perform. If things weren't bad enough, they get worse when her apartment is robbed. Destitute and desperate she seeks work and ends up at Coyote Ugly, a packed, raucous bar with babe bartenders who clog on the countertop, tease the testosterone and have a lot of fun making dough, hand over fist. To say Violet-- now called Jersey--is out of her element would an understatement, but time, determination, a barroom brawl, a beau (she had to get her tape back from Mr. O'Donnell, didn't she?) and bonding between her and her father boost her confidence. Question is, is
