The Bachelor
Chris O'Donnell, Renee Zellweger New Line Cinema 1999 PG-13 Now available on video
Jimmie Shannon has been dating Anne for three years. While he loves her, he's loathe to get married and relinquish his freedom. Still, he feels he has to propose or move on. He reluctantly chooses to take the plunge. What follows is a proposal nightmare that leads to the end of his relationship with Anne. Irony soon slaps him in the face when his grandfather dies. His will states that Jimmie will inherit $100 million dollars if he's married by 6:05pm on his thirtieth birthday. Timing is everything, especially as his birthday is in twenty-four hours. When Anne continues to reject him, Jimmie desperately pulls out his list of ex-girlfriends. Seven proposals later, Buckley, (hilariously played by Brooke Shields) a snobby socialite needing money, accepts his proposal only to find it's more than she bargained for. The clock is ticking. Will Jimmie realize his heart truly belongs with Anne or will the front page newspaper ad his best friend took out asking, "Will you marry this man for $100 million?" find him a bevy of brides to choose from? Anything but suave, Chris O'Donnell goes from full-of-male-bravado bachelor, to harried spouse seeker, to smitten suitor with a transition that's enjoyable to watch. Renee Zellweger sparkles as the unappreciated and heartsick Anne. And a wonderful supporting cast which includes Ed Asner, Hal Holbrook, James Cromwell and Artie Lange adds to the laughs. THE BACHELOR is a light-hearted, fun and fresh flick. From it's narrated beginning to the sea-of-white ending it will keep you laughing. I give it three hearts. The humor is definitely there, but the romance falls short since Jimmie and Anne spend the majority of the movie apart. Overall, a movie worth seeing! Best lines: "Each bouquet was like some airborne spore bearing the seeds of the next wedding." Jimmie "Sh*! or get off the pot." Jimmie's reason for thinking it's time to get married. "You should know, Jimmie, your proposal, it's become an instant urban legend." The florist "I mean, is it me? Am I just really bad at being proposed to?" Anne "There's only one man in the world who would tell a broad she's third on his list while he's proposing to her. Jimmie Shannon." Marco, Jimmie's best friend. "I recall thinking you look nice with your shirt off, but then so do I." Ilana (Mariah Carey), Jimmie's ex-girlfriend.
