Denise Dietz's Dream Dancer

In addition, this novel lacked the feel and substance of a historical romance in the romantic sense. Although Calliope carries a torch for Brian after his death, the reader (as a result of the rough scenes involving the pair) likely has chalked him off as a bad match. Although a string of ill-suited and/or abusive men follow in Brian's footsteps, none rises to the level of an inspiring romance. And, when an unlikely hero turns up in the last third of the book, the reader will only question his motives and discount the validity of the love.

If such a tense plot had concerned characters of more fiber, perhaps the book would have achieved its purpose. And, if one can overlook awkward scenes and repetition of annoying terms, like "puss," for instance, perhaps one can realize that Dietz is actually a clever writer. However, as it stands, Dietz's Dream Dancer loses her intrigue when she steps down from her horse.
