Much to her excitement, the man turns out to be none other than the Dreadful Scot Bandit Kirkpatrick! Prudence, an orphan whose life in her aunt's care is usually dull and monotonous, has read all about the scourge of the Northumberland border and his raids on the rich. She is also quite aware of his ability to make the ladies swoon and gets a taste of his charm firsthand. Prudence relishes the thought of being kidnapped by such a man, and professes disappointment when all he seeks is her assistance in getting to shelter. Without any other adventures calling her away, Prudence agrees to assist the bandit and finds him shelter in an abandoned cottage. There she stays with him and nurses his wounds. Her time spent with the outlaw proves to match Prudence's wildest fantasy, until it is interrupted by the appearance of Sebastian's band of merry men.
