The evil Baron Alford has captured the beautiful Gillian Ranulf and demanded that she return the legendary Arianna's box to him. The only problem is that Gillian, now in her twenties, has not seen the box since the Baron seized her family home and murdered her father fourteen years ago. Nor has she seen her beloved sister, Christen, who had held the box in her hand in Gillian's last memory of her.

With her uncle's life held in the ransom, Gillian sets off to Scotland to find her sister and re-capture the box. Before leaving England, however, she becomes entangled in a botched kidnapping and attempted murder of Michael, the small brother of a powerful Scottish Laird, Ramsey Sinclair. When Michael turns out not to be Michael, but Alec, the Godson of Brodick, the feared Laird of the Buchanans, Gillian feigns an engagement to the Buchanan ruler to entice his assistance in her attempt to escape with the child.

With Brodick, Alec and a troop of Buchanan warriors by her side, Gillian embarks on her quest to locate her sister. But, the journey will not be easy--there are secrets to uncover, maidens to marry off, damsels to save, clan-rivalry to alleve, battles to be fought and hearts to be ransomed and captured before Gillian reaches her destiny.

Julie Garwood's Ransom is an absolutely fabulous and extremely delightful tale of a quest bestowed up a little girl who is caught up in a plot to deceive King John about the fate of his revered mistress, Arianna.

Ransom merits five thistles out of five, because of its powerful and charismatic characters, spellbinding plot and subplots, and its fascinating glimpse into Medieval England and Scotland during the reign of Richard the Lionhearted and the in-absentia King, John. This one is a read that should not be missed, and that will be re-read time and time again.
