ONCE UPON A KISS by Claire Cross Jove Magical Love/Romance 7/98 ISBN No. 0-515-12300-5 Miraculously, a Viking fortress that had it hey-day in 800 A.D. still stands against the mist of the Orkneys in the present day twentieth century Scotland. Even more fascinating is that a fable, without the strength of stone, has also survived. When Baird Beauforte purchases a moss-covered and bramble-\infested Dunhelm Castle to be renovated and its property added to his spectacular chain of Beauforte Resorts, he has no idea that he is buying more than a castle and piece of land. And, when he kisses a beautiful girl beneath a stone portal, he does not know that he has just awakened an almost 1,200 year-old legend. Aurelia's claim that Baird and his friend Julian have taken siege on her father's castle and murdered her brother is dismissed as crazy, but that doesn't solve the problem of what the two men should do with the new-found castle "treasure." Julian wants nothing to do with her and would be happy leaving Dunhelm and its cursed ruins behind. Baird however, is entranced with the strangely costumed beauty and cannot for the life of him figure out why he feels as if he has met her before. Time alone will not stand in the way of the destined reuniting of two ancient lovers, but Interior Designer, Marrissa Witlowe, is willing to give it a try. She has her sights set on marrying Baird Beauforte and is not about to let some self-proclaimed Viking Princess get in her way. But can a mere mortal stand in the way of what was written upon the stars? The Dunhelm heiress Aurelia and successful businessman Baird are two of my favorite of Cross' characters, both painfully proud protectors of their own hearts, who cannot deny their call to destiny. Claire Cross charms her audience with ONCE UPON A KISS, a delightful tale of a ancient sleeping beauty and a modern day dark knight who awaken the past in each other. Filled with ancient, bloody battles for possession of person and property, as well as modern-day squirmishes of want and will, OUAK provides colorful contrasts and striking similarities between the past and present.
