THE LAST HIGHLANDER by Claire Cross
A Time Travel Romance - Jove Time Passages 8/98
ISBN No. 0515123374

The beautiful, modern-day Morgan LaFayette has travelled from twentieth-century America to Scotland in search of the inspiration to create a book of fairy tales. Morgan finds her fables, surprisingly, in the unlikely form of a displaced Highlander from the days of King Robert the Bruce.

Alasdair MacAuley doesn't understand why things around him have changed so much, only that he had too much whiskey after leading the Bruce's army in the recapture of Edinburgh Castle. He recalls being taunted by an old crone who claimed allegiance to the witch Morgaine LaFee, and then following to the rocks her on a dare from his equally weathered battlemates. The next thing he remembers is the bump on his head, and waking up to a beautiful enchantress.

Sure that Morgan is the wicked fairy Morgaine LaFee, Alasdair will not let her out of his sight. He vows to win her favour so that she will grant his return to the mortal world.

After a tumultuous marriage, Morgan has no desire to indulge in any kind of affair, especially with a man who claims that she is witch. As Alasdair's past unravels, however, Morgan begins to see the charming highlander in a different light. As Alasdair weaves fourteenth century Scottish fables, he begins to wrap a thread around Morgan's heart.

Not only does Morgan now have the material for her book, but the seeds a fairy-tale romance to call her own. The only problem is, she has to let him go back to his own time. Can she let true love escape her?
The Last Highlander is a delightful tale of a love that crosses centuries. It provides an interesting glimpse into the history of the infamous leader, Robert the Bruce, while at the same time, plays out a modern day romance.
