Ashley recognized that voice. Gertie Graham! Opening her eyes, she started at a woman who was Gertie and yet she was not. She looked much the same, but seemed as tall as the towers on the west corner of the castle.
Glancing down, she realized the floor was shockingly close. She must be a child. Was she the child who had been banished from this time? Or was this just another dream? Another nightmare like the ones that had haunted her childhood?
"Calm yourself," another woman answered. "What shall happen cannot be halted. I can save only my bairn.
Ashley sought the face of the woman who was speaking. Was this person the Lady Gordon who had died beside her husband when the English overran Castle Braeburn two decades before? She could not see the woman's face, for it was lost in the shadows beneath a hooded cloak of veiled black.
When she was picked up and put on a high bed, Ashley knew what would happen next. This had been part of the nightmare that had filled her nights endlessly. Now, it had returned to plague her again.
But was it only a nightmare? She was no longer certain of anything.
Present circumstances entitle Ashley to inherit Braeburn castle, but something stands in her way. And, that something is tall, strong, powerful, charismatic and extremely handsome. It seems that Laird Colin MacLachlin has just been bequested the castle as a result of his bravery during the English Civil War--and he isn't about to give it up.
