HERE ON EARTH by Alice Hoffman
Berkeley Fiction, March 1998 (Available)
ISBN No. 0-425-16731-3

Emotions are buried deep in the small Massachusetts town where March Murray was born and raised. Yet, when she returns there for a family funeral, it doesn't take much to dig them up.

Yet, March isn't the only one caught up in the complex web of the past, it snares her daughter, her friend, her ex-boyfriend, her husband, her brother and nephew. The strands are thin, and the relationships are fragile--with everyone trying to make sense of the what came before them and find their path toward the future.

This book was a feature in Oprah's Book Club and I can see why. Here On Earth is gripping story about relationships and how we get caught up in and escape them. It is a compelling read about real people dealing with and avoiding real problems. Aside from weaving a captivating story, Hoffman creates prose so captivating and lulling that it is difficult to put this book down.

I recommend this book highly for readers who want to get lost for a while in a sleepy New England town and for writers who want to see how a master spins a tale with words and paper.
