One moment lingering close to death, Rowan ap Emrys finds himself delivered back to life to fulfill his purpose to God. His vision includes the face of a woman who he has yet to meet. Intent on devoting his life to promoting Christianity, Rowan awaits his call to serve the Lord.

When a Scotti tribe invades Wales, Rowan, having resigned from battle to foster himself in God's ways, must again face war.

###"I'll not let you go alone," Dafydd argued. "We'll all go."

"I go alone." The finality in Rowan's voice ended the steward's protest. "I'll not have the Scotti thinking we are rallying against them like villagers."

He was glad Dafydd did not suspect the palm-wetting fear and dread threatening his cool demeanor at the prospect of taking up his sword again. Yet, despite Rowan's strong reluctance to touch the weapon, which had both saved and destroyed him that fateful day on the battelfield, he was not fool enough to approach an enemy intoxicated by bloodlust and victory without it. An undermining cold like a winter book ran through Rowan's body. The Scriptures said to trust in God, but they also said not to tempt him.

"Why don't we let God decide whether we have to use or swords or not?"

Dafydd snorted in sheer wonder. "This from the same man who single-handedly turned away a Pictish attack on---"

"My sworn was my master, then, Dafydd."###

Face to face and sword to sword with the warrior princess Maire, Rowan's recognition sparks the flame that sets "The Fires of Gleannmara" in motion. Maire's stunning countenance proves to be that of the woman in Rowan's vision. Although one-on-one combat portrays him as the stronger of the two, Rowan offers himself as hostage and saves his people the effects of war and follow his suspected destiny.

Maire believes a pairing with a powerful and respected warrior such as Rowan ap Emrys can only serve to help her regain Gleannmara from the clutches of the evil druid Morlach. Anxious to show Morlach that the chance to control her estates by marrying her no longer exists, a confident Maire returns to Ireland. With secrets in tow, Rowan follows Maire to the land of his birth.
