ROMANCE ON THE SILVER SCREEN 2000 The Romance Page's Romantic Picks of the Year

What makes a successful movies? Although there are many possible combinations--mystery, romance, song and dance, intrigue, suspense, comedy, drama, action, thrillers, history--the one ingredient that is most often found in the recipe for success is ROMANCE.

This year's line-up for the silver screen includes many shining stars and many films you may never have heard of or want to hear of. If you love romance, passion lined the silver screen in many shapes and forms. A listing of some of the year's most worthwhile flicks, although with their passion rating, follow:

PASSION RATING---Five Hearts (Best), One Heart (Worst)

THE ROMANCE PAGE'S HIT LIST 2000 Autumn In New York (Five Hearts) http://www.myvideostore.com/content/movi... Richard Gere and Winona Ryder effectively portray an older man/younger woman age-gap couple in this memorable story with a twist. Heartbreaking, but worth the watch.

Erin Brockovich (Two Hearts) http://www.myvideostore.com/content/movi... Julia Roberts excels in her role as Erin Brockovich, a down-on-her-luck mother with a heart of gold. Although this only merited two hearts--romance is only small sub-plot of this movie, Aaron Eckhart (Click here: Erin Brockovich Gallery http://www.myvideostore.com/content/gall... is delightful as Brockvich's love interest and gets five heartthrobs.

Frequency (Two Hearts) http://www.myvideostore.com/content/movi... Dennis Quaid (Meg Ryan's soon-to-be ex-husband) and Jim Caviezel star in this excellent murder mystery). Do not be misled by this two heart rating as a result of little focus on male/woman relationships. This film drips with other important and rewarding kinds of love, including a father's love for his son. Not to be missed!

Gladiator (One Heart) http://www.myvideostore.com/content/movi... Russell Crowe (Meg Ryan's real-life beau) steals the show in this Roman version of "Braveheart." Although romance takes a backseat in this one, his love for his wife is the thread that drives him through this violent, but worthwhile movie.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (Two Hearts) http://www.myvideostore.com/content/movi... The makings of a Christmas romance is uncovered beneath the wrappings and trappings in this entertaining journey through Whoville (based on the story by Dr. Seuss). Although you will find just a little bit of romance, the highlight is a little girl's passion for helping someone in need at Christmas.

The Little Mermaid II: Return To The Sea (One Heart) http://www.myvideostore.com/content/movi... Another hit from Disney, The Little Mermaid II picks up at the birth of Ariel and Eric's daughter, Melody. Surprisingly, this movie is a close second to The Little Mermaid--a tough act to follow. Shorter on romance than The Little Mermaid, but an enjoyable watch.

Hi, Lynne;
I'm glad you enjoyed FREQUENCY. I saw it on a plane - not the best of "cinemas" but I liked it a lot.
