The Celts have always been a people of high spirituality and symbolism. One such symbol of love, the Celtic Love Spoon, dates back to the 16th century. The legend of the Celtic Love Spoon features a young Welsh man, who carved the first wooden Love Spoon as a token of his offer to marry a Celtic lass. Later, this gift became known to the Celts as a symbol of betrothal. From this sign of affection came the term "spooning," which means "to act amorously," as well as spooned, which signifies "a sentimental lover." Although 21st century Celtic Love Spoons are adorned with symbols of love and affection, these symbols were not added until the 20th century. Common symbols are a single heart, which expresses the sentiment "I love you;" linked hearts, which denotes "love shared or love returned;" linked rings, meaning "a promise shared;" a Celtic knot, symbolizing "Forever Lasting," a key, which says "you hold the key to my heart;" and a bell, which asks the question "let's get married," as well as other symbols that signify faith, luck, holidays and celebrations.
