THE LION'S SHADOW by Marthe Arends
Avid Press Historical Romance, October 1999
ISBN No. 0-929613-05-9

Cassandra Jane Whitney is not your typical heroine. As a public demonstrator for the suffragette movement in Victorian England, she isn't winning friends. And, as her role in the protests becomes more active, her enemies are quickly mounting. Cassandra and her friends are constantly being followed, a man with a gold tooth seems intent on causing her harm, and she is often on the verge of being thrown in the brink for her participation in the protests. Yet, the one thing brazen and bold Cassandra finds most maddening in all her escapades is author/explorer Griffin St. John. When called to task for her role in Helena St. John's involvement ith the cause, Cassandra finds it hard to hold her tongue against Griffin, the protective brother. He is arrogant, infuriating, and utterly....intriguing. Author Marthe Arends keeps wonderful twists, turns, and surprises in the shadows of THE LION'S SHADOW as Cassandra moves forward on a path toward emancipation for women that ends up in a tangled web of deceit. And, just when it begins to untangle, she finds herself snared by a strong thread she cannot break. Cassandra and Griffin are marvellously-crafted characters---believably human and incredibly likeable, despite their imperfections. They are fascinating hosts to this romantic suspense story, who lead a cast of similarly spectacular allies and villains, each with an important part in the unravelling of the mystery. As a reader, I was hooked by Arends' captivating voice and charming storytelling skills. As a writer, I was impressed by her impeccable style. Without any graphic love scenes, she manages to keep us enamoured of the blossoming relationship between our hero and heroine. Without any gross or grisly details, she keeps us wrapped in a pleasant amount of suspense. In addition, her knack for humor and humorous detail ellicited many a chuckle from me, especially in the characters of Cassandra and Freddy. After savoring THE LION'S SHADOW, I am eagerly awaiting the release of THE LION SLEEPS, a historical/suspense novel featuring Cassandra and Griffin.
