LITERALLY PLAYING : The Romance of Reading

© Lynne Remick

Toys are wonderful, three-dimensional things to play with, but the very best presents are those that fill you with warmth, passion and wonder while they transport you to another place, in perhaps another world and another time.

No gift can be given that has more dimensions than a work of fiction or non-fiction. The same book will mean different things to different people, and therein lies its beauty. Books are treasure chests of people, places and things for us to discover, should we only read and turn the page!

For many, reading is their first passion, their first taste of romance, either literal or figurative. There are some who remember their first book just as vividly as their very first lover!

A person who falls in love with reading is usually hooked for life. And there is good reason. Reading provides an escape from daily life, refuge into another person, and a means of travelling to places currently beyond our realm. When choosing a book, you can choose your destination and means of transportation.

So, when the ribbons and wrapping paper are thrown away and there is a choice of many, multi-colored items to choose from, my hand always draws first to a new book--a ticket to world that has not yet been explored.
