ROMANCE THROUGH THE AGES : A History of Passion, Love and Lovers in Life, Literature, Fiction and Film

The Garden of Romance (c) 1999 Lynne Remick

Romance is a cherished flower that has bloomed through the annals of time, sometimes in the most unlikely of places. Whether the earth is hard or soft, or there is a lack of water and light, it does not matter. Romance has taken root wherever its seeds were planted and has survived through the ages. The first seeds of romance were sewn long before Peter Abelard and Heloise set their love on paper, centuries before Romeo kissed his fair Juliet on the lips and ages before Jack and Rose vowed their eternal love in the blockbuster film Titanic.

In history, romance sprung forth the first time a caveman looked at a cavewoman with heated passion, hit her over the head and claimed her as his own.

During the Middle Ages and the days of Chivalry, romance was a form of social custom and art. Knights would fight to the death for a lady's honor and lay their capes across puddles so that a lady may proceed on a wet street.

Romance's first appearance in the movies was silent as the hero rescued the heroine from the vile and disgraceful villain in such celluloid classics as "The Perils of Pauline."

One form of religion has romance's earliest evident blossom appearing at the beginning of the creation of the earth, and took root in the story of Garden of Eden. Here, in a place where man named Adam once found loneliness, desire grew from the depths of his despair when he first set his wandering eyes upon Eve.

Through the ages, romance has rooted itself into all aspects of life--history, social mores and behavior, customs, art, literature, myth, folktales, lore, legend, cinema, radio, eras, empires, sports, politics, and even science.

In Romance Through the Ages, we will take a walk through time in order to discover the flowers of romance and explore its history. Bookmark this site and return often for a stroll. The seeds of romance past may just sprout up in your future.
