Romantic Picnics

This is the middle of a three-part feature on romantic meals. Last week, the focus was on the luxury of Breakfast in Bed. Next week, check back for Romantic Dinners for Two.

To begin planning your perfect picnic, consider the time of day and the place of your unique al fresco dining experience. One of the ideal considerations is a spot that will allow as much privacy and intimacy as possible. Note and special hint/suggestion: A picnic does not necessarily mean a lunchtime indulgence. Picnics can be highly enticing in twilight settings as well!! With that in mind, consider the following options.

Locations:

  • on a patio or deck
  • in a park
  • in a gazebo
  • on a beach
  • on a mountain

And don't let rainy days spoil your plans; Simply use a little imagination...

  • pitch a tent (at your original location, if permissible)
  • in the living room floor (also can incorporate the tent here, or throw in some pillows for fun)

    Items to Pack:

    Beverages

  • wine or sparkling cider
  • lemon iced tea
  • fruit smoothies
  • coffee
  • iced cappachino

    Supplies

  • plates (paper, plastic, or china)
  • silverware (plastic or the real thing)
  • napkins
  • tablecloth or blanket roomy enough for two
  • glasses
  • knife
  • cutting board
  • radio
  • bottle (corkscrew) bottle opener

If adventuring on a dusk or thereafter picnic...

  • candles (suggestion: citronella ones to ward off the bugs)
  • tiny white lights to string if on a patio, gazebo, or indoors

    Menu Suggestions:

Pick and choose what's most appropriate and appealing for your picnic setting

  • club sandwiches (BLT or turkey and cheese)
  • chicken & veggie pasta salad
  • gourmet crackers
  • gourmet cheeses
  • french bread
  • bagel chips or baked pita chips
  • grapes
  • strawberries
  • muffins (blueberry, apple, or cinnamone raisin)
  • chocolate glaze brownies
  • Peppridge Farm Distinctive cookie assortments (my favorite is "Endless Chocolate Milano")
