The Notebook: A Tribute

© Michele KayD

This week, I was personally captivated by a highly romantic inspiration. I strongly believe it'll entrance others in a similarly magical way. I read a novel, unlike any other, portraying an enduring, tender love story. The Notebook , by Nicholas Sparks, is worthy of a more complete dedication than my allotted space will allow. However, in sharing this tribute, I hope to inspire others to experience this heartrending work of literature.

To begin, I hesitate merely terming this a "book," for it holds so much more than characters, plot, & setting within its cover. A novel to cherish forever, it's timeless lessons & inspirations will enlighten the dreamer & romantic within, as it's read time & again. It's a literary treasure, with qualities of rare classics, that's truly meant for sharing. Although I've indeed read many books evoking pleasure to mind & heart, I've rarely found one I've desired to reread. There's always been this personal notion that to go back, would mean missing a new experience. The Notebook, is definitely an exception, as each reading holds the potential of touching the heart in new ways through renewed insights & connections as time evolves.

Synopsis: Noah, hoping for a final miracle, visits Allie daily in the nursing home where they both now live. From his cherished notebook, he reads her the story of two lovers- always together but now apart. Their tale exemplifies true love's ability to defy all odds & overcome any obstacle.

As not to spoil the thrill of discovering this treasure for oneself, I'll simply highlight my most memorable parts. First, I found the continual alluding to "poetry in love" charming. There is poetry, according to the characters & their musings, in nature, love, & beauty. While Noah claimed only fluency in appreciating verse, Allie always referred to him as being a poet. Each note Noah left with Allie, near the end, reflects how he learned of love in the same way he blindly became a poet.

Second, is what I consider the most powerful & touching letters of the notebook. The goodbye letter Noah wrote after their summer together was a true window to his secure love, strength, & character. Here, he credits Allie with teaching him the "value of love" & looks to the future with an open-mind & confidence in all they've shared. The last letters each wrote to one another stunningly recaptured their incredible life together.
