Love Poetry: feeling beyond words

Thoughts

thinking of you...
sweet, kind, like a shower of warm rain in sunshine

Last week, a fool-not listening-questioned the volume
but in the following silence...
...heard your gentle voice, as if for the first time
~Gary Boone

In the words of Carl Sandburg, "Poetry is a series of explanations of life, fading off into horizons too swift for explanations...It is the opening & closing of a door, leaving those who look through to guess what is seen during a moment." Whenever I read a deep poem, I often find myself wondering what the poet really meant, felt, or intended to express within that moment. I've recently ( yet not recent enough to compliment the source) read something that finally enlightened me. A poem should be "felt" freely, not over-analyzed . My interpretation is this: trying to "read" poetry destroys the overall impact & potential that lies within it. The true enjoyment of reading any poem is not in reaching the poet's state of mind & emotion, but in creating a personal connection out of the words. The poem then becomes our own through that connection.

The words comprising a poem can be compared to lyrics of a song in this way. Upon hearing a powerful song for the first time, the lyrics may touch the soul because they relate to an experience in our own lives. If , however, we later discover what the artist wrote the song about, those images disrupt our own. Similarly, once the originating inspiration of a poem is realized, the words can never be "felt" again in the same way. The most amazing quality of poetry, especially love poetry, is that it can always bring about different feelings-even in the same person. "The proof a poem is not that we have never forgotten it, but that we knew, at sight, that we could never forget it." ~Robert Frost
