For The Uncoupled

Since most of the romance articles here are structured for already "coupled" readers, I felt the need to mix things up a bit. With that in mind, this week will begin a series of features designed especially for the "uncoupled" amongst us.

Think dating in the 90's is often challenging? We've actually lightened up considerably. In the American Colonial times, a romantic evening consisted of gathering around the hearth with the entire family. The traditional activity was whispering "sweet nothings" to your date by way of a long, hollow tube, complete with ear and mouth pieces.

"The Rules" have changed, but the eternal allure of classic romance seems to never fade. It has been a common romantic gesture for a man to request the honor of his future wife's parents. One Native American custom for marriage selection took this concept to the extreme. After the man asked to marry her, the daughter hid in the woods. If the man found her in two out of three attempts, she would be his. On the other hand, if he failed, he would get one final chance several weeks later. If he was again unsuccessful, he lost her for good.

Courtship rituals have evolved, thank heavens. Looking through the eyes of history, suddenly the 90's don't seem quite as rough on the dateless. (source of customs: The 1992 edition of "The Southern Farmer's Almanac")

Back to modern times . . . . Finding that special someone takes time and lots of patience. (A little luck can't hurt either.) Some people seem to search forever, perhaps because they put far too much emphasis on the chase, or they just look in the wrong places. We've all heard the suggestion of meeting potential mates in the grocery store. Ok, so that may happen every now and then, but come on . . . there's got to be a better way. Co-authors of How to Start a Romantic Encounter, Larry Glanz and Robert H. Phillips, suggest these top 10 meeting hot spots:

  • bars
  • singles dances/parties/vacations
  • dating services and personal ads
  • bookstores/cafes
  • work
  • classes
  • weddings and engagement parties
  • churches and synagogues
  • concerts
  • outdoor activities

Whether searching for Mr. or Ms. Right or simply looking for some dating tips, the Internet provides innumerable avenues. If you're brave enough to try the virtual dating scene, here a few of the elite sites:

  • Heart to Heart Introductions
  • Cupid's Network — Designed as a meta-site for singles on the web, there's resources galore for finding that special someone.
