We all have an innate need for touch. The skin is the largest sense organ of the body, and the simplest physical contact can trigger emotional and mental connections.

Massage reduces stress levels and is believed to be highly beneficial for overall health. It can improve circulation, the immune system and brain functions. Massage is suggested to soothe muscles, headaches and certain allergies. It has even been credited with aiding the digestive and nervous systems.

Different Types of Massage

  • Deep tissue is mainly used for sports.
  • Therapeutic is to relax and/or produce healthful benefits.
  • Swedish utilizes the entire hand in generally flowing movements to work muscles.
  • Shiatsu is a Japanese method of using the fingers to knead pressure points.
  • Sensual massage soothes, relaxes and stimulates the senses.

Tips on Preparing for a Sensual Massage

A sensual massage should be anything but rushed. If assuming the role of "receiver," put aside all worries and responsibilities. As the giver, take the time to fully enjoy and explore your partner's body. The most important factor is to maintain continual contact with the skin.

A great prelude to your sensual massage session is a luxurious bubble bath or shower (for one or two!). The goal is to relax and prepare the body and mind for a sensual awakening.
  • If using massage oil, warm it with your hands or in the microwave. Use just enough to cover the palms without causing it to drip.
  • Switch roles from "giver" to "receiver" after about 30 minutes of indulging.
  • To enhance the overall experience, use aromatherapy products such as candles, lotions, oils, etc.
  • Add some soft, relaxing music to the background. Choose something that won't distract from the desired mood.
  • Consider your location. Since massage tables are not practical in most homes, a bed, couch, or even the floor are all acceptable locales. Don't discount outdoor options - poolside, the lawn, or a lounge chair will work.
  • As far as what to wear, less is definitely more. Anything loose, comfortable, soft and easily removable would be optimal. A basic sheet, towel, blanket, or robe is perfect.
