Romantic Decorating

Got the post Valentine's letdown, or are you feeling relieved the whole holiday is done for another year? Whichever side of the spectrum you fall under this week, there is "room" to add some loving cheer into your environment. Consider some ways to extend a bit of the Valentine spirit throughout the year with romantic decorating.

Concentrate on one room or try to recreate/extend a fond memory. Add exotic plants to a porch to elicit the warmth of a tropical vacation paradise, turn a living room into a cozy cabin-like setting by installing a small fireplace, make your bedroom mirror the design of a honeymoon or rendezvous suite.

Whether you prefer the classic, old-fashioned charm of Victorian decor or the more modern elegant styles, romance can easily and inexpensively be added to any room. By selecting a few key items and colors, the allure of love can come through immediately. Some such inclusions are:

  • window treatments - silken, brocade, lace, fringed, tasseled, floral draperies or sheer panels hung delicately over a curtain rod or canopy bed.
  • rugs - Victorian area rugs, animal skins, etc.
  • lamp shades - especially featuring crystal, beaded, or silk fringes
  • furniture - anything soft, cushiony, and comfortable - canopy beds, settees, window seats, whirlpool tubs (which actually only cost an average of $40 more than the standard versions)
  • lighting - softness is the key. To attain, use lower voltage or pink bulbs, recessed, or wall sconce lighting. Consider stringing miniature lights around a tree (indoors or out), over a curtain rod, around that canopy or headboard, etc.
  • pillows - load up with rich or pastel accent pillows on a bed, couch, or chair. Add some overstuffed floor pillows, as well. Use any appealing design and focus on fabric. Try mixing chenille, velour, satin, velvet, tasseled or fringed styles, even lacy patterns.
  • flowers and vases - fresh is ideal, but many realistic silk arrangement exude romance and soften a room instantly. Also consider scattering fresh rose petals over a bed or in an awaiting bathtub.
  • candlesticks and candles - This is the most simplistic yet vital element of romance for decorating. All shapes, sizes, scents and colors are ideal. Small votive or tealights are invitiing in a dainty glass holder or stemware; floaters add a sense of sensuality in an elegant bowl or in the tub (perhaps along with some loose flower petals); pillars are romantically evocative placed in pretty vases or even simple water glasses tied with a pretty bow; three-wicks are ideal for all-evening appeal and work well on antique pie plates or crocks; and tapers are perfect for beautiful tabletop candlesticks or in floor stands for full-room mood lighting.
