Spring's In Bloom

As of March 21, Spring has officially "sprung!" In order to lift our Winter-laden spirits & welcome in this season of rebirth, this week's editorial is fully in honor of flowers. Flowers have always been classic romance gifts as well as symbols of gratitude, sympathy, & respect. What most people are unaware of is that flowers each hold specific meaning. Likewise, certain floral combinations within bouquets also hold distinct symbolism.

While the rose is deemed the most popular & cherished flower for lovers, the "un-flora-educated" are often unaware that different colored roses hold very different meanings. Red, the most commonly chosen shade, represents passionate love; pink means perfect happiness; purple (thornless) says it's love at first sight; white suggests innocence; & yellow signifies jealousy. Similarly, some very touchingly unique flowers are often overlooked. Jasmine, for instance, is considered one of the sexiest flowers in the world. It is a night-bloomer & is renowned as one of the greatest aphrodisiacs of all by those using aromatherapy. Cleopatra must have intuitively known of its power, for she was often said to have placed Jasmine in her hair to distract Marc Antony from business dealings.

Remember, it is the 90's, so it is completely appropriate for a woman to shower a man with flowers! Add to the overall presentation by placing the flowers in unique spots such as: on his/her car seat, pillow, or desk; under the windshield wipers; in the shower/bath, etc. Other notable options: Have them delivered to work or ask a waiter/waitress to bring them to your dinner table. Be sure to impress your mate by explaining the symbolism you've learned behind each of your sweet picks! One final note: Don't consider flowers only for special occasions--they are most highly-adored when given "just because."

Why not consider some non-traditional choices for upcoming bouquets? Here is a list of some other common flowers & their not-so-common meanings:

  1. Azalea = "Take care of yourself for me"
  2. Begonia = "Beware"
  3. Bittersweet = "Truth"
  4. Bluebell = "Humility"
  5. Cactus = "Endurance"
  6. Crocus = "Cheerfulness"
  7. Dandelion "Faithfulness"
  8. Forget Me Not = "Memories"
  9. Forsythia = "Anticipation"
  10. Gardenia = "Secret Love"
  11. Hyacinth(purple) = "I'm sorry"
  12. Sunflower = "Pride"
  13. Sweetpea = "Good-bye"
