Lunar Love Lore

Being a "moon child" (a nickname of fellow Cancerians), I'm particulary drawn to the moon and its significance. Those born under the Zodiac sign of the crab have the moon as our ruling planet, and are thus most affected by lunar phases. However, the moon is one highly fascinating heavenly body that's been guiding all people throughout time. There are lots of romantic connections associated with the moon as well. With all this in mind, and in honor of the Suite101's special feature, this week's focus brings to light the unique relations of love and lunar lore.

First, here's some fun lunar facts and symbolism:

  • blue moon - has absolutely nothing to do with the color, but rather represents a fairly rare celestial occurrence of two full moons in any one given month. (Note: the next blue moon will be January 31, 1999.)
  • lunar rainbows - Yes, these are possible, as I've recently learned. A rainbow can, and has, formed from the glow of a full moon's reflected light, when merged with moisture drops in the sky.
  • a listing of the stages and phases of the moon, as they relate to relationships (for detailed charts and times, see the web links below):
    • waxing moon (growing towards full) = time for positives, growth
    • waning moon (diminishing) = time for decreasing or banishing negatives
    • new moon (from the day of the new moon through 3 ½ days later) = time for love, romance - optimally between dawn and dusk
    • full moon (14 days after the new moon) = also good for romantic endeavors with midnight being the best time
    • disseminating moon (3-7 days after the full moon) = appropriate time for ending relationships, separations, divorce, healing
    • Moon in Aries = beginnings, but not necessarily long-lasting ones
    • Moon in Leo = love affairs, pleasure
    • Moon in Libra = marriage, partnerships
    • Moon in Scorpio = sex

There are also many legends/myths based on the moon, several of which are romantic in origin or nature. Festivals are celebrated in honor of these lunar legends.

Tanabata is a Japanese children's festival set around a tragic romantic Chinese myth. As the ancient tale is told, there was a star princess who is now represented in the sky as Vega. She was in love with a gentlemen now symbolized by the star Altair. They were so in love that they neglected their work and were punished by her father by being sent to opposing ends of the Milky Way. They were only permitted to meet each other once per year, on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. They met on a bridge created by birds.
